Insights into the future of logistics: Visit to the Amazon Logistics Centre FRA3
On 13 June 2024, 19 highly motivated international and national students from the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science and economics from Schmalkalden University, had the unique opportunity to get an insight into the logistics giant Amazon at its FRA3 site in Bad Hersfeld.
The company visit was organised by Christian Simoneit (WORT - International Career Service) and Catharina Wassink (WORT - Begegnungszentrum).
The day began with a warm welcome and a detailed company presentation by Erik Truckenbrodt, a former student and proud ambassador of Schmalkalden University. Erik then took the group on a tour of the state-of-the-art logistics centre, explaining the different areas and complex operations.
The Amazon Logistics and Fulfilment Centre in Bad Hersfeld (FRA3) is impressive in its sheer size, covering more than 110,000 m², the equivalent of around 15 football pitches. Opened in 2009, the centre employs around 2,000 people and currently trains 13 apprentices in IT (3) and RME (10), as well as seven dual students at this and the neighbouring FRA1 centre. Notable sustainability initiatives at the site include the installation of electric charging stations and the use of electric trucks.
Amazon operates more than 175 logistics centres worldwide, of which FRA1 and FRA3 in Bad Hersfeld are among the largest and most modern. The two centres work closely together to ensure the efficient distribution of goods across Europe. FRA1 specialises in sorting and preparing items for shipment, while FRA3 relies on advanced robotics and automation.
But Amazon is not standing still. In his presentation, Erik Truckenbrodt mentioned that FRA3 will be upgraded to a robotic centre with the latest technology by 2027. He also discussed the practical implementation of logistics innovations, such as the combination of algorithms and machine learning for efficient planning and execution of deliveries. Same-day delivery are initially tested in urban areas closer to fulfilment centres. Frequently ordered products are strategically located in different warehouses to ensure fast delivery.
A particular highlight was the interactive Q&A session with site manager Marcel Biedenbach, joined by Erik Truckenbrodt, Christina Biedenbach and Susanne Kraußmüller from the HR department. The students took the opportunity to ask many questions and gain valuable insights. They particularly praised the open corporate culture and the team's willingness to answer all questions in detail. They also learned a lot about career opportunities, the application process and requirements.
Overall, the visit provided an exceptional learning experience and a deeper understanding of the complexities and innovations of modern logistics. The students left with a greater appreciation of the future of the logistics industry and the exciting opportunities it holds.
